Summary

Luke Skywalker and Lando Calrissian return in this essential novel set between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens

The Empire is dead。 Nearly two decades on from the Battle of Endor, the tattered remnants of Palpatine's forces have fled to the farthest reaches of the galaxy。 But for the heroes of the New Republic, danger and loss are ever-present companions, even in this newly forged era of peace。

Jedi Master Luke Skywalker is haunted by visions of the dark side, foretelling an ominous secret growing somewhere in the depths of space, on a dead world called Exegol。 The disturbance in the Force is undeniable。。。and Luke's worst fears are confirmed when his old friend, Lando Calrissian, comes to him with reports of a new Sith menace。
After his daughter was stolen from his arms, Lando searched the stars for any trace of his lost child。 But every new rumor only led to dead ends and fading hopes-until he crossed paths with Ochi of Bestoon, a Sith assassin tasked with kidnapping a young girl。

Ochi's true motives remain shrouded to Luke and Lando。 For on a junkyard moon, a mysterious envoy of the Sith Eternal has bequeathed a sacred blade to the assassin, promising that it will give him answers to the questions that have haunted him since the Empire fell。 In exchange, he must complete a final mission: return to Exegol with the key to the Sith's glorious rebirth-the granddaughter of Darth Sidious himself, Rey。

As Ochi hunts Rey and her parents to the edge of the galaxy, Luke and Lando race into the mystery of the Sith's lingering shadow and aid a young family running for their lives。

My favorite of the new books。 We get to know Luke and Lando better, hear more of Rey’s origins, meet a previously unknown Sith Lord, and go on a fantastic adventure。 Highly recommend!

"It was up to them – the two of them, Lando Calrissian and Luke Skywalker, the impresario and the farmboy, the general and the Jedi; heroes of the Rebellion, brothers-in-arms。 Luke looked into Lando’s eyes。 He saw the light in them, the fire, the passion。 In Lando’s eyes there was anger and fear, but what there wasn’t was despair。 There was hope。 Despite everything, there was hope。"4,5/5!Shadow of the Sith takes place some years after the events of Return of the Jedi and follows Luke Skywalker, "It was up to them – the two of them, Lando Calrissian and Luke Skywalker, the impresario and the farmboy, the general and the Jedi; heroes of the Rebellion, brothers-in-arms。 Luke looked into Lando’s eyes。 He saw the light in them, the fire, the passion。 In Lando’s eyes there was anger and fear, but what there wasn’t was despair。 There was hope。 Despite everything, there was hope。"4,5/5!Shadow of the Sith takes place some years after the events of Return of the Jedi and follows Luke Skywalker, now a master of his own Jedi temple, and Lando Calrissian, who has spent years looking for his stolen daughter, as they try and save an innocent family being hunted by the Sith assassin Ochi of Bestoon。 At the same time an ancient sith power, that Luke has sensed, is growing, threatening the whole galaxy。I really liked this book。 It was action-packed, full of cool world-building, great characters and I love how well it was tied to other stories (like Greg Pak's Vader comic, Chuck Wendig's Aftermath books and even, in a small way, to Mike Chen's Brotherhood) - those connections made this book feel firmly part of the new canon as a whole。 Some have described this book as Star Wars Episode 6。5 and it certainly is that。 This book ties the original trilogy and the sequel trilogy more closely together, and provides so much context for the sequel trilogy and some of its smaller characters like Rey's parents, Beaumont Kin and General Pryde。 If you want a bit more clarification as to why certain things are the way they are in the ST (like why Lando is on Pasaana, who Ochi is and why Rey's parents left her on Jakku) this book is a good one to read。 Also, it's just a very well-written story - it's long but never dull, emotional in every way (funny, heartbreaking, creepy。。。) and I think Christopher just gets the characters he writes。This book is mostly centred around Luke and Lando。 Both were written in a way that felt genuine to who they are as characters。 It was cool seeing Luke as a confident Jedi Master with his own temple, his own quests for knowledge and how he has grown from the man he was in Return of the Jedi。 Seeing him in full Jedi-mode, being that compassionate, kind, hope-driven warrior he is was amazing。 I also liked the hints Christopher made towards his future and how and why he ends up losing hope so dramatically。 I may not like that decision the ST made with Luke, but this book did a little to ease my saltiness over it。 But despite Luke being my fave of the entire saga, the shining star of this book for me was Lando。 This is a very unique story for him, since in this story, we see him at his lowest, having lost his daughter years ago and having spent years looking for her all over the galaxy。 He is a much sadder character now, one who carries a lot on his shoulders and who has lost that ever-joyous spark he usually has to guilt, regret, anger and grief。 But despite all this, he is still Lando。 He never feels out of character, and he still has that charm to him that we all know and love。 Christopher wrote him very well - this book is definitely one of my new favorite non-film appearances Lando has made in the new canon。The supporting characters were also all great。 Dathan and Miramir, Rey's parents, are central to the book and, honestly, I grew so attached to them。 They were such a wholesome couple, so devoted to each other and their little daughter, and their fate (though I obviously knew it was coming) broke my heart。 I also loved Komat - she was perhaps my fave original character in the book - and Kiza, whose arc was interesting, strange, occasionally awful but always captivating。 Ochi is trash, has always been, and this book just deepened my loathing feelings for him。I love it when Star Wars embraces fantasy and fantastical elements, and Christopher certainly did that。 There were ancient powers, magical objects, creepy voices and all that good stuff。 But as weird as some of the Force-stuff sometimes got (and I loved all of it), the book never lost its heart and humanity, which is, of course, what SW is all about。 The story was always rooted in characters, what they went through and who they are。 A story can be all epic action, battles and magic, but if we do not care about the characters, what's the point? At least that's how I feel。Now, time for my few gripes。 First of all, why not just reveal who Lando's daughter's mom is? We all certainly wanna know and though I have my theories, I would like to have a solid answer。 I also think this book, as a story focused on Luke and Lando, could've had more quiet moments with the two。 We have never really had stories focused on their friendship and their bond in the new canon, so I would've loved to see more of that。 I liked their banter, the way they are obviously forever bonded by what they have been through together and how they trust each other implicitly, but I would've loved more quiet conversations。 I think having more of those moments might've bumped my rating to 5/5 stars。I really recommend this book。 It's epic in scope, it's well written, it's funny and sad as fuck all at the same time, and it genuinely made me appreciate the ST, especially the Rise of Skywalker, more。 I know you shouldn't have to read a book to understand a film's story, but TROS is what it is, and I for one am glad that they allowed a writer as talented as Christopher to explain some of the movie's plot holes。 BUT, I want to stress that this book is not just a story that fills in some plot holes and tries to fix the mistakes of the filmmakers - it stands on its own as a great story and one that I know I will come back to in the future。 。。。more

This book was absolutely incredible。 It not only did the impossible and made rise of skywalker make a little more sense but it’s an interesting story by itself。 If your a Star Wars fan this is a must read especially if your looking for more post Rotj Luke skywalker stories。 It also features one of the more interesting and unique villains in Star Wars。 Everyone should pick this up regardless of their feelings on the sequels。

An emphatic no; a rambling first 150 pages full of repeated phrases, a constant vagueness at the beginning of every chapter leaves you wondering what character we’re following for several pages in this book with multiple characters, each with their own plotlines, it didn’t pay off with anything interesting enough to keep me on board。Lovely cover and a very interesting lightsaber duel, though。

This is a very good read but as someone who really enjoyed The Rise of Skywalker, I enjoyed just about everything。 Ochi of Bestoon has turned into a pretty interesting character and of coure more of Luke Skywalker and Lando Calrissian is a major plus。 Easy 10/10 and debatably one of my favorite Star Wars novels。

Pretty easily a Top 5 Stars Wars novel in the new canon。 It leans heavily on the mystical aspects that have been so vacant from the novels until now。The only negative I have against this book is that portions read like an apologetic for The Rise of Skywalker's numerous sins and plot holes。 Part of me appreciates the effort and another part would rather never think about that drivel again。My other wish is that they had made Lando a little more "Lando" and a little less "Han Solo fumbling his way Pretty easily a Top 5 Stars Wars novel in the new canon。 It leans heavily on the mystical aspects that have been so vacant from the novels until now。The only negative I have against this book is that portions read like an apologetic for The Rise of Skywalker's numerous sins and plot holes。 Part of me appreciates the effort and another part would rather never think about that drivel again。My other wish is that they had made Lando a little more "Lando" and a little less "Han Solo fumbling his way through 4 movies。" That charisma and cool factor that exists in Billy Dee Williams and in the comics is completely absent from this book。 It would have been interesting to see typically calm, collected, and cool Lando trying to out cool the calm, collected, and cool Jedi Luke。 That dynamic would have been really interesting, but was explored at all。 By and large, this is a great book。 It is one of the few I'd be willing to go out and buy for my own collection, which as of now only comprises The 2nd and 3rd Aftermath books, Master and Apprentice, and Bloodlines。 。。。more

Luke’s plot line of discovering these Sith secrets coming to surface again was my favorite。 I enjoyed every moment of this book and I highly recommend it as a must read for SW books! 。。。more

Adam Christopher writes a tremendous addition to the Star Wars canon。 It is fun getting to learn more about Luke and Lando (what a seemingly odd pair) and the adventure they undertake。 Christopher did a great job adding some depth to Lando that I hope that we continue in the Lando series。 I also enjoyed reading canon-peak Luke during this time before the Jedi temple is destroyed。 Like seeing him in the mandalorian, we get to see him at his absolute best。 In addition to these two, it was fascinating getting to read about Reys parents, dathan and miramir。 They get more screen time in this novel than the whole of the sequel trilogy and paints their story of strife well。 I will say, the chapters where Ochi of Bestoon was the POV character were a little rough for me to get into。 They parts about the Sith blade were interesting but his character as a whole was meh。I think this was a well written novel; one of the longer ones in canon recently。 The story flows well to me until the end, I feel like the ending - while not bad - left me wanting。 There is so much action and intrigue in the rest of the novel that the ending was a little more slow and didn’t fit with the overall narrative。 It was likely done to ease the reader out of the story but instead I felt like, “that was it…?”。Aside from that, the rest of the book was jam packed full of suspense, action and more action。 We even get one of the coolest editions into canon - SPOILER WARNING - in Anakins Force ghost appearing and saving Luke’s life。 This was such a fascinating and well written plot point。 I was so disappointed it took place so early and I wanted so much more。 I hope we get more ghost-ani in the future because he was an absolute powerhouse。 I definitely recommend this book to all! 。。。more

With the sequel trilogy there are years and years of time that are unaccounted for。 There are stories to be told and man does Shadow of the Sith cover an important one。 For those who were disappointed by how The Last Jedi and Rise of Skywalker handled Rey’s parents, I think you’ll find their inclusion here impactful and emotional。 We know where this story is heading but it still hits every emotional beat it should adding new depth and layers not only to Rey but the history of her bloodline。 The With the sequel trilogy there are years and years of time that are unaccounted for。 There are stories to be told and man does Shadow of the Sith cover an important one。 For those who were disappointed by how The Last Jedi and Rise of Skywalker handled Rey’s parents, I think you’ll find their inclusion here impactful and emotional。 We know where this story is heading but it still hits every emotional beat it should adding new depth and layers not only to Rey but the history of her bloodline。 The inclusion of Lando is superb and not only does Christopher provide the right voice, you can almost hear BDW saying each line, but he delves deep into the heart of Lando。 Shows the pain and emotion behind the grin and bravado。 It’s fun seeing Luke on this journey knowing where everything is heading。 Seeing him at his temple and exploring the way of the Jedi and the Sith is a real treat。 There are so many gaps in Luke’s story that I want and SotS supplies a solid chunk。 On the whole the book is dark and forbidding。 It truly opens the sequel trilogy and enhances any future viewings。 Most of all, it’s a kickass Star Wars story and an absolute blast to read。 。。。more

I’ll start by saying that I’m happy they’re exploring the time between ROTJ and the Sequel Trilogy a lot more。 This book was definitely trying to put together the framework for TROS。 I think this book did a lot lore-wise from confirming Luke’s Academy was on Ossus, to clarifying things about Exegol, Lando, and even explicitly mentioning some cool Legends tidbits。However, this book was way too long, and it felt like the descriptions of things were just overly detailed。 There’s something about the I’ll start by saying that I’m happy they’re exploring the time between ROTJ and the Sequel Trilogy a lot more。 This book was definitely trying to put together the framework for TROS。 I think this book did a lot lore-wise from confirming Luke’s Academy was on Ossus, to clarifying things about Exegol, Lando, and even explicitly mentioning some cool Legends tidbits。However, this book was way too long, and it felt like the descriptions of things were just overly detailed。 There’s something about the writing style that just has to redescribe everything about a setting every time something happens there。 I also felt like the Exim Panshard thing was almost totally unrelated to everything else。 Furthermore, Dathan and Miramir just weren’t very interesting in and of themselves。I will praise this book though for Lando。 It did Lando extremely well。 I even got super invested in one part where he’s reminiscing about who his older self was, and if that older self was still alive。 I ended up feeling a very vivid pang of nostalgia, and had like a flashback to a night out in 2nd year in TK。 。。。more

A good story that gives a bit more back story on Rey’s arc in the general story…I was hoping for a bit more of a ‘reveal’ moment (like Miramir being from Naboo or something, related to Padme, I don’t know) but it never came…but I still enjoyed the overall story。

4。5 stars rounded up to 5。 A fun bridge between the OT and the ST, most specifically dealing with a lot of elements from The Rise of Skywalker。 The author manages to deftly weave in not just these ideas, but tons of different characters/locations/ships/etc from across the Star Wars canon, all the while telling an entertaining story that stands on its own。

I really had to mull this over。 It’s times like this I wish Goodreads had a 10-star system, because this might be more of a 3。5。 Some of my rating has to do with the experience of actually reading through the whole thing, which was sometimes rewarding and sometimes not。I’m not sure that Rey’s parents Dathan and Miramir feel like fully formed characters to me still。 It kinda feels like they were assigned names solely based on the first letters of “Dad” and “Mom。” Their story could’ve been a whole I really had to mull this over。 It’s times like this I wish Goodreads had a 10-star system, because this might be more of a 3。5。 Some of my rating has to do with the experience of actually reading through the whole thing, which was sometimes rewarding and sometimes not。I’m not sure that Rey’s parents Dathan and Miramir feel like fully formed characters to me still。 It kinda feels like they were assigned names solely based on the first letters of “Dad” and “Mom。” Their story could’ve been a whole separate novel, with the Luke and Lando stuff maybe as a separate thing。 I understand they have to be intertwined given how the backstory is described in The Rise of Skywalker, but the threads feel so parallel that it kind of does not all come together in the best way。Lando is pretty good, here。 He’s grieving that his daughter is still missing after several years, and he even looks back at his younger self’s recording of The Lando Calrissian Chronicles。 I just wish we had more info on his daughter and his wife。 It feels like the book has to hold back because not everything is defined yet。 Are they waiting for the Lando series to explain more?Luke is pretty great。 I’ve been wanting stories of him and Lor San Tekka exploring old Jedi temples for years。 Amusingly, Dominic Monaghan’s character in The Rise of Skywalker, who is such a nothing character or a meme character there, gets a bit more dimensionality。 But getting back to Luke, it was a long time coming having a scene where he sees his father’s Force ghost。 The way he’s described sounds like he looks like Hayden Christensen, though for a moment he apparently switches to Sebastian Shaw。 What’s distracting, though, is how the way Anakin speaks does not sound like how Hayden’s young Anakin would speak。 The vocabulary sounds more like that of Vader, or maybe even Sebastian Shaw’s Anakin。 I can’t really imagine Hayden or Matt Lanter talking like this。We get more of Exegol, and your mileage may vary about the added lore。 Ochi of Bestoon is still such a nothing character to me。 The Greg Pak Darth Vader comics (which are referenced) solidified that for me。 Surprisingly, he’s been active as an assassin since the Clone Wars, even encountering Depa Billaba and Mace Windu。Shadow of the Sith certainly fills in some gaps in our understanding of the sequels (more specifically The Rise of Skywalker)。 It even ties back to the Aftermath trilogy with the Acolytes of the Beyond。 But it also leaves some questions unanswered。 At the time we’ve gotten this book, some of the answering feels too little too late。 An essential read, but maybe not one that everyone will enjoy。 。。。more
